The keto diet has become ever so popular in the last few years. There is plenty of solid research backing up the benefits of this diet, and the positive impact it can make on an individual’s overall health. From weight loss, to improved cholesterol, and so much more, the keto diet may be just what you needed for 2022!
- Weight Loss
Weight loss is probably the most known benefit when it comes to the ketogenic diet. The science behind it has been proven. Transitioning from a carb-heavy diet to a diet higher in fat and moderate in protein allows the body to more effectively burn fat. The keto diet stabilizes blood sugar which curbs cravings, keeping you full and energized. For many, this diet is also realistic and sustainable as you can enjoy some of your favourite foods! I mean, did you ever imagine someone would be telling you to eat chips while dieting?! There are so many delicious keto friendly options waiting for you!
Excess inflammation in the body can lead to unpleasant symptoms like body pain, joint stiffness, swelling, fatigue, and weight gain. In addition to these acute symptoms, almost all chronic diseases stem from inflammation. The keto diet has been shown to reduce inflammation due to several reasons. Firstly, ketones, which are produced while on the ketogenic diet, have been shown to be very anti-inflammatory. In addition, the ketogenic diet stabilizes blood sugar which has been shown to lower overall body inflammation. This is because spikes and drops in blood sugar and insulin lead to systemic inflammation within the body. The foods being consumed while on the keto diet do not cause these surges and falls in blood sugar. Lastly, the diet promotes anti-inflammatory foods like fatty fish, coconut oil, and eggs.
Many people still believe that high fat diets lead to high cholesterol levels. Yet, more and more research has shown that fat is not the enemy, in fact processed carbohydrates and diets high in sugar are the cause of high cholesterol. Those following a ketogenic diet see a decrease in “bad” cholesterol, and an increase in “good” cholesterol. This is because the diet eliminates foods which are processed and high in sugar (the culprit of bad cholesterol spike). Those worried, or watching their cholesterol levels should consider trying the ketogenic diet!
- Brain Health
Did you know the ketogenic diet was initially designed to treat numerous neurological disorders, specifically epilepsy? Many studies have shown that ketones, which are produced while on the keto diet, are a major element in preventing brain damage. In fact, ketones have been shown to protect brain cells from strokes, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s disease. Many on the keto diet also experience improved memory, concentration, and brain stamina. MCT oil is a great supplement that can help increase ketone production therefore leading to better focus and energy!
- Heart Health
Diets that are lower in carbohydrates and higher in healthy fats have been shown to improve overall heart health! As mentioned earlier, cholesterol is a huge biomarker when it comes to assessing an individual’s risk of heart disease. The keto diet has been shown to lower cholesterol. In addition to lowering cholesterol, the keto diet has been shown to have a positive effect on both blood pressure and blood sugar control. When considering blood sugar control and diabetes prevention, it is no surprise that when you eliminate most carbohydrates, blood sugar control improves drastically. The less sugar you eat, the less sugar you have floating around in the bloodstream. Many studies also show that the keto diet can help lower blood pressure, a third important measure of cardiovascular health.
