What is Camu Camu?
Camu Camu, otherwise known as Myrciaria dubia, is a sour berry native to the Amazon rainforests, particularly in Peru. Fresh Camu berries are fairly sour, which is why they are usually taken in the form of powders and pills. These berries are packed with health benefits and therefore fly off the health food store shelves.
Why Camu Camu?
- Real Food Source of Vitamin C
Camu C powder contains the highest levels of vitamin C compared to any food on this planet, naturally! One teaspoon of camu is over 1000% of the vitamin c needed daily! To put things into perspective, ½ a teaspoon of camu camu, is similar to consuming around 300 oranges! Vitamin C levels are so important for the immune system, formation of collagen, absorbing iron, wound healing, and strong bones and teeth.
- High in Antioxidants
Camu powder is high in powerful antioxidants, particularly three called flavanoids, anthocyanins, and ellagic acid. Antioxidants are needed to fight off free radicals, which lead to inflammation and chronic disease. Increasing antioxidants daily has been shown to be effective for disease prevention and longevity. Camu C is a perfect way to get in those antioxidants!
It is clear that almost every disease and condition either stems from systemic inflammation or is caused by inflammation alone. Preventing inflammation is so important when it comes to preventing collateral damage within the body,, and elevating our overall health and wellbeing. Camu contains a specific antioxidant called ellagic acid that has been shown to inhibit systemic inflammation in the body.
